Key Quest: Detention
Real story: I left them a 1 star review on Google. I was the only person to leave a review. Less than 3 months later they closed permanently. Coincidence?
overview
You’re a student that has been sent to detention for being the class clown. You can either serve your 45-minute detention, or prove that you have indeed been listening in class by solving a series of puzzles to find the hall pass and get out of detention early.
Oh, that relatable feeling. That moment when you're sent to detention for putting a thumbtack on the teacher's chair, but of course all they care about is that you've been listening in class. That feeling everyone knows when your teacher sets up the worst "escape room" ever to prove that you're listening in class. Everyone knows that feeling.
Please. No. Please.
quick stats
don't go. Just don't.
However, if you demand to do the worst escape room in America, here's some stats.
gameplay time: 45 minutes
recommended team size: 2-4 players
difficulty: 2/5
scare level: 0/5
location: various
website: YAY CLOSED FOREVER
considerations: -very boring
scenery
Well, they took my 1 star review on Google seriously!
Detention's scenic design was very... metaphorical. They, um, really tried to fill the space, and, uh, conveyed their feelings about- okay, let's be honest, it's crap.
They literally took a party room and filled it with homework. I'm not kidding in the slightest, and that isn't even an exaggeration. No theming, nothing added to the room except for sheets of paper and locked boxes on tables. They don't even have a designated room for their "games".
The most compelling feature of Detention was the added trash can in the corner of the room. It had used tissues in it. You had to dig around them to get your next clue.
Ah, what fun.
puzzles
Detention's puzzles were completely in the storyworld. It impressed me how themed around the game these puzzles were.
That is to say, they're homework.
I've literally seen some of those math worksheets when I was in 6th grade. The puzzles are just not fun in the slightest, because they are literally homework. I would expect to find those puzzles in middle school homework.
This review will be pretty short, because I've said everything I need to. It's just not good.
pros and cons
pro: it doesn't exist anymore!
con: no effort in theming.
con: puzzles are quite literally homework.
con: not fun in the slightest.
con: one puzzle is likely very unsanitary.
con: costs more than your average escape game.
overall
Key Quest is easily the worst "company" I've ever been to, and it seems a lot of people agree. It's not even its own separate company. It's owned by the Laser Quest chain, who make really good laser tag arenas. However, with this attempt at an escape room expansion clearly only for more money, Laser Quest has brought their reputation down a bit. Luckily, it seems that this expansion is closed, but if it gets brought to life again, for the love of god, don't go.
